Quintessential Media Player

Quintessential Media Player which, for simplicity, I will refer to it as QMP even though the developer calls it "qmp." There are no small letters when speaking about QMP because it is a largely overlooked, but potent music player.

Let's look at the library first. The library can list your tracks all at once or sort them into nine different categories such as Album, Artist, Genre, etc. You can even further refine these settings in the library preferences. The library refreshes itself every time you start the player. The search feature works similar to Google Instant. It will bring up suggestions as you are typing. QMP has an excellent built-in tag editor. QMP can import existing playlists as well as creating its own.

The player has a 10-band equalizer with a mixer along with 18 presets and the ability to create your own. When playing a track QMP will look for the Album Art in your hard drive and if it doesn't find it, the player will get it from Amazon. The CD ripper will rip in four different formats. (.mp3, .ogg, wav & wma) and will send it to the directory of your choice, tagged long with an automatically generated playlist. You will need to download and install the LAME encoder for the ripper to function which is available through the QMP website.

While it is listed as a music player, QMP will play and catalog your movie collection. I used it to play my music videos and the nice thing about QMP, when going "Full Screen," unlike its video cousins, there is an option that will maintain the aspect ratio so Big Mama doesn't look like Skinny Minnie and vice versa. It is for this reason, alone, that QMP will remain on my hard drive now that the tests are complete.

QMP comes with one default skin, but you access a full library of skins right from within QMP and there's no need to fire up your web browser.

15 MB is it's install weight, but I believe a lot users will beef it up with some the good number of plug-ins on the QMP website (along with actual user reviews) to increase the functionality your player. They include: Input plug-ins allow QMP to play various types of music files. DSP's (Digital Signal Processing) plug-ins to enhance and modify the sound as it plays, Tag Editing plug-ins and much more.
